Bergamot Oil for Aromatherapy Massage

Bergamot oil is a bright green concentrated oil obtained by cold pressing the rind of the citrus fruit (Citrus bergamia). It is a natural product that has a strong, fragrant, uplifting, and soothing citrusy scent characterized by a spicy taste (not advised to ingest). Bergamot oil is used by aromatherapists as it is appraised for its antimicrobial, analgesic, antispasmodic, anti-inflammatory, and antifungal properties.

Many individuals inhale it to provide immediate stress relief, reduce anxiety, and calm the mind. Just like many essential oils when inhaled, its aroma travels through the nasal passage to the smell receptors and down to the nerve ends. Then, eventually stimulates the brain area for reawakening strength, vigor, relaxation, and maintaining good emotional balance.

It is also used for treating skin diseases like acne and pimples and acts as an excellent insect repellant for wading away disease-causing vectors and germ-spreading agents.

Usage

Some people trust the topical application of bergamot oil on the skin. Much of the reason is to reduce sebum production by tightening skin pores. When the oil is diluted with a carrier oil, you can apply it on the skin area affected with pimples, acne, and small cuts and leave it overnight. Bergamot oil is an ideal natural cosmetic product for both the skin and hair. Another advantage that renders it, not a complete cosmetic product, is that you can ease muscular pain or muscle cramps by properly kneading the stressed muscular fibers.

You can also diffuse the scent of the oil by using a vaporizer or a diffuser. This will sanctify the air and rid them of microbes, thanks to the antimicrobial effect of the bergamot oil. In addition, the dispersed particle of the bergamot in the air relieves pain, improves mental alertness, and uplifts the mind by inhalation.

Bergamot oil is also reputable to provide an excellent blend with other essential oil of citrus origin. You can blend the oil with lavender oil, tea tree oil, and chamomile oil to enhance the properties of the oil. Integrating it with frankincense oil, Patchouli oil, or Yuzu oil will help to achieve the targeted health benefits and medical purpose

Risk

Bergamot essential oils are highly concentrated plant extracts that are not regulated or monitored by FDA. Many products from manufacturers are of poor quality and not all round organic. Before you buy the oil, try researching the quality of the brand product and discuss it with your aromatherapist before usage.

Ingestion of bergamot oil as a route of administration is dangerous and poses serious risks to the liver and kidney cells. Essential oils are natural irritants and potential sensitizers. The common symptoms of their allergic reaction include redness of the skin, skin rashes, skin itches, and irritation.

As sensitization depends on the tolerance level of individuals, it is important to conduct a patch test on the skin before finalizing on adoption for health benefits.

Caution

Bergamot essential oils should be kept away from children under 7 years to prevent poisoning. You should consult with a medical practitioner to determine the choice of oil and the duration and frequency of exposure. Bergamot oil can be used by pregnant women, but it is essential to meet with your doctor to discuss interaction with prescribed drugs and the general status of your health before considering it for aromatherapy.

For topical application and inhalation, 2 to 3 drops of the oil should be diluted in a teaspoon of carrier oil, such as coconut oil, jojoba oil, or olive oil, to prevent allergic reactions. To test the suitability of bergamot oil for your skin care. Rub a spot on your skin with diluted oil. For the patch test, use oil with twice the concentration that will be used for normal application and observe the effect on your skin for the next 24 hours. If no changes are noticed, then you can use the oil.

Bergamot’s irritation effect on the skin becomes increased with exposure to sunlight.

Takeaway

Bergamot essential oil is a refreshing citrus extract that provides both cosmetic and medical benefits, suitable for blending with other oils. When used judiciously, it is safe for relieving stress, curing acne and eczema, and proper functioning of the nervous system.
